Departmental Honors Program
In
order for a student to graduate with Chemistry departmental honors,
the student must complete CHEM 291 and 491. These are both research
courses. Thus a chemistry honors student will have completed a
minimum of one year of research in a faculty members laboratory
before graduation.
In
addition to performing their research, the students must present
it. They can present their work at a scientific meeting or publish
a paper; they can present a poster at the departments seminar
day, or they can write a report in journal form and submit the
report to the chair. Most students present their work at scientific
meetings and at the departments seminar day. Many of our
honors students have been co-authors on faculty research papers.
In
Fall 2003, the department will begin offering in a formal way
CHEM 643, a one-credit masters level course. The Department
recommends that all honors students take this course in addition
to their research. The honors students would become familiar with
the work of some of the weekly seminar speakers and would discuss
their research with the speaker. While it has been current practice
to have many of the honors students meet weekly with the seminar
speaker, the process has not previously been formalized in a course.
The
formal seminar course would be similar to the one offered at Columbia,
which has been very successful in preparing students to do independent
research.
