Department of Mathematics and Statistics
Departmental Honors Program

Qualified students have the option of an accelerated BA/MA program, either in pure mathematics or in statistics and applied mathematics. In pure mathematics, students take a number of courses at the Graduate Center.

The Honors Seminar MATH 490 allows students a research experience by working with a full-time faculty member, preparing a script, and presenting a talk based on the script. Students in their third year may be eligible for MATH 490 if they have the prerequisite courses. Qualified students elected to Pi Mu Epsilon, the national undergraduate mathematics honor society, may present a paper at the annual summer meeting of the Mathematical Association of America. Such a paper may result from MATH 490 or an Independent Study course.

There are 1-, 2-, 3-credit Independent Study courses that also make possible a research experience. Students completing a project have the opportunity of presenting a talk in the Department’s Lecture Series. They also may be nominated for a research award from Sigma Xi, the national scientific research society. Qualified students may receive free membership in the national professional organizations: American Mathematical Society (AMS), Mathematical Association of America (MAA), and American Statistical Association (ASA). There is also the possibility of nomination to membership in Sigma Xi.

The national Problem Solving Competition conducted locally at Hunter awards to the winner a chance to compete in the championship finals held during the annual summer meeting of the MAA. In the past the College has funded the students’ travel expenses in this event.

The Department expects to renew for another two years (through August 2005) the NSF Scholarships program in Computer Science and Mathematics. Qualified students receive a scholarship that essentially covers tuition. Recipients participate in a 1-credit independent study project which introduces the students to the life of a research mathematician. Monthly seminars are held in which students talk about their research experiences.

The Department hopes to initiate internships with various other departments at Hunter so that majors in math/stat can contribute to an ongoing project of a full-time faculty member. Interest in such internships has been expressed by the Departments of Geography, Political Science, and Psychology. The Hunter Poll might be another possible source of internships. It is expected that students will receive credit for an internship.
