Department of Philosophy
Departmental Honors Program

To be eligible for graduation with departmental honors in philosophy, a major must have at least a 3.50 GPA in philosophy and at least a 3.0 overall GPA. The student must register for the 3- or 6-credit PHILO 494, which is taken in addition to the 30 credits for the major. To apply for departmental honors the student must write a substantial paper under the direction of a full-time faculty member. The essay is judged by the departmental Honors Committee, which determines whether the essay merits honors.

As of spring 2004, the Philosophy Department has a chapter of Phi Sigma Tau, the international honors society for philosophy. The department accepts faculty nominations of students as well as students’ self-nominations. Members are selected by the departmental Honors Committee. Students who have completed at least two courses in philosophy, in which they have maintained 3.50 GPA or better, and who have completed no less than two semesters of their college education are eligible for membership. Inductees receive newsletters about the organization and opportunities for its members in addition to a copy of the student philosophy journal Dialogue.
