Hunter Cafeteria Sustainability

harvest2

Hunter's cafeteria participates in City Harvest, a "food rescue" program.  Each day, hundreds of food service establishments across New York City find that they have prepared more food than they are able to sell.  The City Harvest organization dispatches trucks to these businesses, and the excess food is then delivered to soup kitchens, food pantries, daycare and senior citizen centers, and homeless shelters.  The added benefit of this program is that it helps keep food that would otherwise be discarded out of the waste stream.

By sourcing its fruit and vegetables locally whenever possible, from farms in upstate New York, Hunter's cafeteria supports reducing the farm-to-kitchen miles traveled by the trucks transporting food, which reduces fuel consumed and greenhouse gases generated by the freight trucks.
