What is Turnitin?

Turnitin is a web-based tool that can serve as a deterrent to plagiarism and can be used to educate students about appropriate use of sources in writing and research. Turnitin accounts are available for all Hunter instructors.

How does using Turnitin prevent plagiarism?

Instructors set up classes in Turnitin and student papers are submitted online. Submitted papers are compared to billions of pages of content on the Internet and to Turnitin's proprietary database, which includes millions of student papers previously submitted to Turnitin. Turnitin then generates an "Originality Report" for each submitted paper, indicating how closely the paper matched the content in the Turnitin database. These Originality Reports are used by instructors to help determine whether plagiarism has occurred. Papers submitted to Turnitin become part of the Turnitin database, unless the instructor specifies otherwise.

How do I start using Turnitin?

Hunter Faculty:

Contact Michael Nisbett (Ph: 650-3358) to set up a class account.
You will receive a class account ID number and password.
Visit www.turnitin.com, create a user profile, and use the account ID and password to join.

Hunter Students:

Your instructor will give you a class ID number and a class enrollment password.
Visit www.turnitin.com, create a user profile, and use the class ID and enrollment password to enroll in the class.

How do I use Turnitin once I'm signed up?
