Learning technology toolbox

Notice: This item is marked as outdated.

Hunter faculty have access to a variety of tools that can enhance teaching and learning.  ICIT’s educational technologists can help you select the appropriate tool for your goals.  To set up an appointment, email edtech@hunter.cuny.edu.    Additional information about support for teaching with technology.

Blackboard
Blackboard is a web-based course management system that allows you to set up a web site for your course.  Blackboard sites give you the ability to post syllabi and course content, engage students in online discussion, and collect and grade student work using online quizzes and assignments.

Blackboard extensions

You have the option of using a number of interactive tools that have been added to Blackboard: Learning Objects (includes blogs and wikis), Wimba Voice Tools (includes podcaster, voice discussion board, and chat), and Scholar (social bookmarking).  We are piloting the use of iTunesU for podcasting.  You and your students can also add the Blackboard Sync application to your Facebook page to receive information about updates to your Blackboard courses via Facebook.

Blackboard alternatives/supplements
We can help you get started with a number of  alternative tools for communication and collaboration, including box, drop.io, and Google apps.  An ePortfolio system and Wordpress MU are currently under consideration, but not yet available.

Student response system (clickers)

Hunter has several hundred eInstruction clickers, which faculty can borrow for use in their classes.  Please contact an educational technologist at edtech@hunter.cuny.edu to get started.  If you are already familiar with Hunter’s system, the clickers can be reserved by contacting Classroom Technology Services at av_res@hunter.cuny.edu.

Creation of rich media content (audio, video, podcasts)
We support creation of rich media content using a variety of tools, including Camtasia, Audacity, Garageband, Studymate, Movie Maker, and iMovie.

Distribution of rich media (audio, video, podcasts)
Audio and video podcasts can be published online using our podcast manager.  To request a podcast feed for your class, contact Shiao-Chuan Kung, skung@hunter.cuny.edu.  Large media files can be stored on our Silo file server.  To request a Silo account, email bb@hunter.cuny.edu

Plagiarism prevention software
Plagiarism prevention software can help deter plagiarism and can be used to educate students about the appropriate use of sources in writing and research.  Hunter faculty have the option of using SafeAssign, which is integrated into Blackboard, or Turnitin, which is a standalone, web-based system.  To request a class account on Turnitin, contact Mike Nisbett at mnisbett@hunter.cuny.edu.

Test creation software
Respondus is software that allows you to create and manage tests, surveys, and quizzes offline, and then upload the results to Blackboard or print the results.
Download Respondus (requires your Hunter NetID and password)
