Configuring Apple Mac OS X Mail to work with SSL

These instructions apply to versions 3 and 4 of the Mail application in Mac OS X (Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6 respectively). The same instructions are applicable to version 2 (Mac OS X 10.4) but individual wording and menus may not be exactly the same.

Open Mail (Mail.app), click the Mail menu and choose Preferences (or press ⌘ and comma).

Click the Accounts icon/tab and then select the icon that represents your Hunter mail account from the vertical list at the left-hand side (many people will only have one icon).

You will see the SMTP settings preference sheet. Click the Advanced tab.

The standard settings for Hunter accounts are shown below. These should be changed, both to increase security and compatibility with Hunter's new mail system, and also to work around restrictions recently imposed on Internet users by Verizon, RCN and other internet service providers.

Change Use default ports (25, 465, 587) to Use custom port. Replace whatever value is set here with the value 587.

Check Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).

Verify that Authentication is still set to Password. Enter your NetID and your NetID password in the fields below if necessary.

When you are done the sheet should look as below:

Click the OK button to return to the Accounts property sheet. Close the property sheet by clicking the red button at the top left of the property sheet. You will be asked if you wish to save changes to the mail account. Click the Save button.

Mail is now configured to work with Hunter's outgoing mail server and to bypass restrictions imposed by New York internet service providers.
