Configuring Microsoft Outlook 2007 to use SSL
Follow these instructions to set up Outlook to be secure and compatible with Hunter's email systems. This tutorial uses Outlook 2007, the current standard version in Hunter. The information in this tutorial is also applicable to earlier versions thought the actual position and wording of menus and dialogs may vary slightly.
Open Outlook 2007. From the menu bar click Tools, and from the Tools menu choose Account Settingsā¦
The accounts dialog box will open. Select the account that represents your Hunter email and click Change

The Change E-mail Account dialog will open. Press the More Settings⦠button.
In the Internet E-Mail Settings dialog press the Advanced tab. For standard Hunter email accounts, it will look as below:
Go to the Outgoing server (SMTP) section. Locate the line Use the following type of encrypted connection: and change the value in the dropdown next to it to TLS. Then go up to the line Outgoing server (SMTP) and change the value in the field next to it to 587. You need to do this operation in the order specified, as choosing TLS sets the value of this field back to the default of 25, which is not compatible with Hunter mail.
When you have finished, the dialog box should look like the example below:

Press OK to close the Internet E-Mail Settings dialog. You will return to the Change E-Mail Account dialog. Click the Next> button. You will be taken to the last dialog ("Congratulations!"). Press the Finish button.
You will return to the Account settings Dialog. Press the Close button to complete the process.
Outlook is now configured correctly for Hunter mail. If you are using Verizon, RCN and some other New York internet providers, this will also resolve errors you might have had while trying to connect to Hunter mail servers using these networks.
