How to set up Apple Mail - Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard"
These instructions are applicable to all Hunter people, students, staff and faculty, after 11/21/2009
Apple Mail is the default mail application on Mac OS X. These instructions are for Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard". For other versions of Mac OS X see other documents in this folder: Email Tutorials.
When Apple Mail is first opened, you will be prompted with the following welcome screen. Fill out your Full Name as you wish it to be seen by other email users, your Email Address (NetID@hunter.cuny.edu or a valid alias), and your NetID (email) password. When you have filled in each field press Continue.

In the next panel you will be asked for more details about the mail server and your account on it.
- For Account Type choose IMAP
- Enter a Description such as Hunter
- Enter ms1.hunter.cuny.edu for Incoming Mail Server
- Enter your NetID for User Name
- Enter your NetID password for Password

When you have completed all the fields above press Continue
You will be asked to specify details about mail security. This step is important and should not be skipped. Check Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and ensure Authentication is set to Password.

Make sure the dialog above matches the one on your screen and then press the Continue button.
The next section is about the outgoing mail server.
- Again enter a Description such as "Hunter" for the name used to refer to this connection.
- Set Outgoing Mail Server to smtp1.hunter.cuny.edu
- Check Use only this server
- Check Use Authentication
- For User Name enter your NetID again
- For Password enter your NetID password again

When you have completed all the fields above press Continue
The Account Summary screen should appear as follows. If the settings below (apart from your user name) are not the same as what you see on your screen, press Go Back and make them the same. Press Continue in each previous step until you get back to the screen below. Check Take account online and then press Create.

Mail should go online and retrieve your Inbox and any folders you created in another mail program such as Outlook or Webmail. If you have problems connecting to the Hunter mail system, first check that all the settings are as above, and then call your Help Desk for assistance: The Hunter Help Desks
