How to set up Microsoft Outlook Express 6 to work with Hunter Mail
These settings will work for an office computer at a Hunter campus or a home computer connected over the Internet. These instructions apply to students, faculty and staff from 11/21/2009 onwards.
Outlook Express is the internet mail program included in Windows XP. It is not related in any way to the Outlook program that comes as part of Microsoft Office, despite the similar name.
The following tutorial will guide you through the set up process using Microsoft Outlook Express 6. If you're using an older version of Windows or Internet Explorer, your setup procedure may vary.
Go to the Windows Start Menu, Click on Programs and launch Outlook Express.

If you have never used Outlook Express before the Internet Connection Wizard will start and walk you through the basic steps of creating a new email connection. Follow the wizard in the steps below but you should know in advance that the Wizard steps are not sufficient to create a working Hunter email account. There are more steps to be performed at the end of the Wizard before you can send and receive mail from Hunter correctly.
Start by entering the Display Name. This should be your full name. After each screen is complete, press Next.

Next enter your email address. This is your NetID followed by "@hunter.cuny.edu"

Enter your email server name details like this:
- My incoming email server is an IMAP server
- Incoming mail …server: ms1.hunter.cuny.edu
- Outgoing (SMTP) server: smtp1.hunter.cuny.edu

The next screen asks for your account logon details. Fill it in as follows:
- Account Name: your Hunter NetID
- Password: your NetID (email) password
- Check Remember password if this is a computer you own or control and do not share with anyone else. Otherwise leave it unchecked. You will then need to enter your email password every time you connect with Outlook Express
- Leave Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) unchecked. If you check this then you will not be able to log onto Hunter mail

This completes the Internet Connection Wizard, which has captured basic information about your email account. Press the Finish button to exit the Wizard and go onto the next part of this tutorial which fine-tunes the connection to work correctly with Hunter email. Remember the account as configured will not work with Hunter mail until you finish the next steps.

You will probably see the dialog box below. Press the No button.

In the main Outlook Express program window, go to the Tools menu and click Accounts…

In the Internet Accounts dialog, highlight the ms1.hunter.cuny.edu entry and click Properties.

Click the Servers tab at the top of the new Properties window. Look at the section Outgoing Mail Server. Check the box My server requires Authentication and then press the Apply button.

Still in the Properties dialog, click the Advanced tab. Fill in the Server Port Numbers section as below.
- Outgoing mail (SMTP): enter 587
- Check This server requires a secure connection (SSL)
- Incoming mail (IMAP): 993
- Check This server requires a secure connection (SSL)
- Leave all other settings alone

Press the OK button when you have completed setting up the dialog.
Return to all previous dialogs and press OK or Close until you return to the Outlook Express program. Outlook Express is now set up to work with Hunter email.
Outlook Express should go online and retrieve your Inbox and any folders you created in another mail program such as Outlook or Webmail. If you have problems connecting to the Hunter mail system, first check that all the settings are as above, and then call your Help Desk for assistance: The Hunter Help Desks
