How to set up the iPhone for Hunter mail

These instructions are applicable to all Hunter people, students, staff and faculty, after 11/21/2009. The following tutorial will guide you through the set up process using the iPhone 3.1 software. If you're using an older version of the iPhone software, your setup procedure may vary.

In this tutorial the orange highlight shows you where to tap, or indicates an area where settings must be added or changed.

Go to the Home screen of your iPhone and tap the Settings icon

 Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars

 Tap Add Account…

 Tap Add Mail Account

 You will be taken to the New Account screen.

Enter your Hunter mail information as follows:

  • Name: Your full name
  • Address: your Hunter email address, which is your NetID followed by "@hunter.cuny.edu"
  • Password: your NetID password
  • A description such as "Hunter"

When you have completed these fields tap Save.

After you tap Save you will be taken to a setup screen for this new account. Make sure the big IMAP-POP tab at the top is set to IMAP (the word IMAP should be in white on a blue background).

Scroll until you can see the Incoming Mail Server section

 Complete the Incoming Mail Server section as follows:

  • Host Name: ms1.hunter.cuny.edu
  • User Name: your NetID
  • Password: your NetID password. The password should already be filled using information you have already supplied in an earlier step and does not need to be re-entered or changed.

When you have entered the data as shown below, scroll down to the next section, Outgoing Mail Server

 Fill out the Outgoing Mail Server section as follows:

  • Host Name: smtp1.hunter.cuny.edu
  • User Name: your NetID
  • Password: your NetID password. The password should already be filled using information you have already supplied in an earlier step and does not need to be re-entered or changed.

When you have filled out this section as shown below, tap Save.

 After you tap Save, the iPhone will spend some time checking your settings. When the check is complete, you will see check-marks appear by each setting. If the check fails, return to the previous information and double-check your settings.

 You will return to the previous screen. You now have a Hunter account configured but it needs to be fine-tuned before you can continue. Tap the new Hunter account's entry in the list to go to its settings.

 In the settings screen for Hunter, tap SMTP

 In the SMTP settings screen, tap smtp1.hunter.cuny.edu to go to the settings for this server

 In the bottom half of the smtp1.hunter.cuny.edu screen, tap the slider control next to Use SSL so that it reads ON. Change the setting of Server Port to the number 587. Then tap the SMTP arrow (top left) to return to the SMTP screen. On that screen tap the Hunter button (top left) to return to the account settings for the Hunter account.

 On the SMTP screen tap the Hunter button (top left) to return to the account settings for the Hunter account. In the Hunter screen tap the Advanced button (just below the SMTP button) to go to the Advanced settings screen for this account. Make sure that the settings are as follows:

  • Use SSL: ON
  • Authentication: Password
  • Server Port: 993
  • All other settings can be ignored

When you have checked these settigns, and made any changes necessary, tap the Hunter arrow (top left) to return to the Hunter account settings page.

 From the Hunter screen tap the Mail… arrow (top left) to return to the Mail, Contacts, Calendars screen.

Your iPhone is now set up to send and receive Hunter mail. To begin, press the Home button on your phone (the big round button at the bottom of the phone, below the screen), then tap the Mail application icon. Find the Hunter account in the Accounts list and continue using Hunter mail.
