How to set up Microsoft Outlook to work with Hunter email

These settings will work for an office computer at a Hunter campus or a home computer connected over the Internet. These instructions apply to students, faculty and staff from 11/21/2009 onwards.

Outlook is the email client included in the Microsoft Office suite. The following tutorial will guide you through the set up process using Microsoft Outlook 2007. If you're using a different version of Outlook, your setup procedure may vary.

Note: If you already have Outlook set up with another account and would like to add your Hunter email account, you may skip the first two steps in this tutorial.

When Outlook is first opened, you will be prompted with the following welcome screen. Click Next to continue.

On the Account Configuration screen, choose Yes to configure an email account and then press Next to continue.

The following two steps only apply to users who already have Outlook set up with a separate account. If configuring Outlook for the first time, you may skip the next two steps.

To add your Hunter email account to Outlook, select Tools -> Account Settings.

 Outlook (screen 3)

On the Account Settings screen, select the E-mail tab, followed by the New button.

 Outlook (screen 4)

In the Auto Account Setup screen (below), select the option that allows you to Manually configure server settings or additional server types. To continue, press the Next button.

 Outlook (screen 5)

In the Choose E-mail Service screen, choose Internet E-mail and press Next.

 Outlook (screen 6)

On the Internet E-mail Settings screen (below), enter your name and email address (NetID@hunter.cuny.edu or a valid alias) and input the following:

  • Enter IMAP for Account Type
  • Enter ms1.hunter.cuny.edu for the Incoming Server.
Enter smtp1.hunter.cuny.edu for the Outgoing Server.
  • Enter your NetID credentials for User name and Password. If you do not know your NetID, or are unsure of your password, please visit ICIT's website NetID Central to confirm your details or reset your password.

Finally, click More Settings on the bottom right.

 Outlook (screen 7)

In the Outgoing Server tab, verify that the My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication option is enabled. Also, verify that the Use same settings as my incoming mail server option is enabled.

Outlook (screen 8)

In the Advanced tab, verify that, for Incoming server (IMAP), the Use the following type of encrypted connection option list has SSL selected. Also, verify that the Incoming Server port is configured to 993.

Next, go to the Outgoing server (SMTP) section. Locate the line Use the following type of encrypted connection: and change the value in the dropdown next to it to TLS. Then go up to the line Outgoing server (SMTP) and change the value in the field next to it to 587. You need to do this operation in the order specified, as choosing TLS sets the value of this field back to the default of 25, which is not compatible with Hunter mail.

To continue, click OK and then Next in the Internet E-mail Settings screen.

To complete setup, click Finish in the Congratulations! screen.
