IT Help for New Students
New to Hunter? Confused by all the terms? This page will help.
You should also check out our online help pages! They have specific information on many Hunter and CUNY applications and services.
CUNY Portal: This gateway, which you use your CUNY Portal ID (and password) to enter, gives you access to any services hosted centrally to be used by all of CUNY's colleges. These services include eSIMS, Blackboard, DegreeAudit/DIG, and the eMall.
Hunter NetID: This username (and its password) are what you use to access services hosted specifically at Hunter, for the Hunter community only. These services include e-mail, the wireless network, PAC terminals, and OneCard.
Blackboard (or Bb): A course management system heavily used within CUNY. It permits the instructor to post assignments & quizzes, hold discussions on internal forums, upload files, and more. (Not all instructors use all features.)
eSIMS: This CUNY application is most familiar to students because it's how you register for classes each semester. However, it also lets you see your unofficial transcript, pay your bill online, and check certain holds against your registration.
PACs: "Public Access Computers" are terminals around the Hunter campuses that students can use for basic web browsing (including checking e-mail).
OneCard: Your Hunter student ID card has accounts encoded on it that let you use it to pay for printing, copying, cafeteria food, vending machines, and dorm laundry at Brookdale. These account services are known collectively as "OneCard."
DegreeAudit: Also called DIG (Degree Information for Graduation), this is a CUNY-hosted tool that lets you check what courses you still need in order to obtain your degree.
CUNY eMall: A web-store available through the CUNY portal that allows members of the CUNY community to purchase software and hardware at significant discounts. (This is also where you can download free anti-virus software.)
