Registration Help

This page has a collection of information and answers to common problems to help students with the technology end of registration for classes.

 

We still have isolated reports from students that in some cases, Internet Explorer 8 does not work correctly with eSIMS.  If you are having problems clicking on links within eSIMS, check what browser and version you are using.  IE6, IE7, and Firefox do not suffer this issue.

How do I register?

The application you use to register for classes at Hunter College is called "eSIMS".  You access eSIMS by logging into the CUNY Portal.

 

How do I log into the CUNY Portal?

You can reach the CUNY Portal by going to www.cuny.edu and clicking the "Portal Log-in" link on the lower left-hand side of the page.  If you haven't yet activated your CUNY Portal ID, we have step-by-step instructions on how to do that.

Please note: If you have only just been admitted to the College, you may not be able to activate your Portal ID for 24 hours, as the systems will not have the same data.  If the CUNY Portal does not recognize your identifying information, please wait until noon the following day to try to activate your Portal ID.

Once you have logged into the Portal, you'll see a link for "eSIMS" (click to see screenshot).  Click on that link to access eSIMS and register for classes.

 

I don't know my CUNY Portal ID or password!

You can now see your username (if it exists) and reset your password online via the CUNY Portal. Please follow the walkthrough here.

You can also have just your password emailed to you: Go to www.cuny.edu and click the "Portal Log-in" link on the lower left-hand side of the page.  On the login page, click the "Forgot Your Password?" link.  CUNY will e-mail you a new password to the address they have on file for you.  This is probably your Hunter address, but it may not be!   If you haven't received a new password to your Hunter e-mail address within two hours of clicking the "Forgot Your Password?" link, you should use the online reset as described above.

 

I can log into the Portal, but I don't have a link to eSIMS!

If you do not have an eSIMS link--click here for a screenshot of where it should appear--you are probably logging into the CUNY Portal with the "Applicant" ID you set up to apply for admission.  You need to activate your "Student" Portal ID.  (Click here for a walkthrough.)

There is another possibility: If you have not taken classes for several semesters, you may no longer be considered an attending student.  In this case, you will need to go to the Admissions Department to be readmitted.

 

I can log into the Portal, and I can go to eSIMS, but I can't register for classes!

CUNY's systems may have you associated with a college other than Hunter, or in a non-student role.  You need to check your CUNY Portal Profile to make sure your settings are correct.  We have step-by-step instructions on how to do that.

 

I have been getting correspondence from Hunter and/or CUNY, but my name/date of birth/personal information in it is wrong.

This will not prevent you from registering.  If you know the right "wrong" information--for instance, if your last name is "Smith" and your correspondence is being sent to "Mr./Ms. Smithee"--use the incorrect information to log in for the time being just so you can register for classes.  Once you're done registering, go to the Registrar's Office in Rm. 217 North to get your records corrected.

Exception: If you have a Social Security Number mismatch, come to the Student Help Desk to resolve the problem.

 

General Tips and Tricks

  • Make sure you are looking at the correct semester.  For instance, Winter Session courses are found under "Fall".
  • If eSIMS tells you there's a hold on your account, the Help Desk can't make it go away.  You will have to talk to whatever office placed the hold on the account to resolve the issue.
  • Sometimes you have the correct prerequisites or conditions for a course, but eSIMS doesn't recognize that fact.  For this sort of problem, you will need to go to OASIS, in 217N.  (Make sure it's not just that the course is full.)
