Webmail (2009)

Hunter webmail 'Standard' and 'Enhanced' for all Hunter email users

Webmail now comes in two flavors: 'Standard', which is the webmail staff and faculty users have been familiar with, and now 'Enhanced'. As of Nov. 22, the 'Enhanced' version will be the default for Webmail. Users can still choose to go to standard by clicking the link on the sign-in page, and both will be available in the future. There will be circumstances when one or the other is preferable.

What is the difference between the two versions of Webmail?

Standard uses plain HTML and will be more compatible with a wide range of browsers and assistive devices. Enhanced uses Javascript (the browser must have Javascript enabled) to provide better integration of features with the browser. Use of options and features is very similar between the two versions, but with some rearrangement. Specific differences are detailed below. There is no difference in the content of email or addressbooks.

Reasons to use Enhanced Edition

  • Folder listings directly accessible in the left-hand navbar
  • Simpler interface for addressing emails
  • 'Options' contains all settings that are in Options and Preferences under Standard Edition
  • Auto-reply can be set to expire, and use different replies for Hunter vs. external addresses

Reasons to use Standard Edition

  • Broader compliance with assistive devices
  • May suit some browsers having limited capabilities (e.g. some mobile devices)

If you have a bookmark for Webmail that leads to the standard version, you may wish to update it or simply change it to "https://webmail.hunter.cuny.edu"

Other changes to Webmail

Options: 'Redirect' changed to 'Forward'

Previously, Webmail for staff/faculty used the term 'Redirect' for forwarding all of a user's email to another address. This term has reverted back to 'Forwarding'. This setting in Webmail Options does the same thing as before- sends all Hunter email to another address. Please remember that this option is NOT the same as forwarding a single message (which is a link or button within the message viewing window in Webmail).

Options: Change Password now in NetID Central

As previously announced, all changes to Hunter NetID password will take place using NetID Central

Options: Shared Folders

Enhanced Edition lists an item in the left-hand navbar called 'Shared Folders'. This feature, and a corresponding capability to edit Folder Permissions, are easy to misunderstand and misuse in a way that will allow others to read, edit and delete your email.

  • ICIT recommends: do not explore shared folders and editing folder permissions.
