What is the IELI?
The International English Language Institute (IELI) is part of Continuing Education Programs at Hunter College of the City University of New York (CUNY). We have offered courses in English as a Second Language (ESL) since 1950. The IELI serves thousands of students every year, in courses ranging from Beginner English to Bridge-to-College Level English. We enroll New York City residents, visitors on tourist visas, diplomats and international students. We are authorized to issue I-20 forms.
The IELI offers full-time and part-time classes in order to:
- Prepare students to enter an American college or university.
- Develop accuracy for academic or business communication.
- Develop fluency and confidence in social and business situations.
The IELI is located in the heart of Manhattan.
Our 68th Street main campus, and our 94th Street Hunter Campus Schools, are located on the Upper East Side- close to public transportation, Central Park, shopping, restaurants, museums and theaters. Our Silberman Campus, on 119th Street, is surrounded by the Jazz and Soul of up-and-coming Harlem. Near colleges and universities such as NYU, Baruch, The New School and many more, our Brookdale Campus on 25th street is just one stop away from 14th Street-Union Square, and a short train ride from bustling 42nd Street, where students can enjoy the sounds and sights of Manhattan. Whichever the campus, one thing is certain: our students are sure to get a taste of the NYC life!
The IELI is truly international.
Our students come from over 70 different countries around the world.
The IELI is here to help you.
Our online registration system makes it easy to register from anywhere in the world, or our registration staff can help you choose and register for classes in person. Our student services department can help you with all visa requirements, and our academic advisors can guide you through the college application process and help you decide which classes at the IELI are best for you.
The IELI program is both challenging and fun.
Our faculty uses the latest textbooks and technology to give you a first-class language learning experience. Social events include cultural outings, coffee hours, holiday parties, and day trips to places of general interest.
