Mathematica

Mathematica is a software package which is ideal for communicating scientific ideas, whether this is visualization of a concept in an intro-level course, or creating a simulation of a new idea related to research. Mathematica is used in virtually all of the world's top universities and colleges, and is commonly used in the following types of departments: Mathematical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Business and Finance, Life Sciences, Engineering, and Computer Science.

Mathematica is currently installed in the computer labs maintained by IT.

Download Mathematica for Students

Download Mathematica for Students: Full-time students can download Mathematica for free.

Students with Mathematica: To download Mathematica for use on your home computer, you will be prompted for your Hunter NetID and password to begin the download.

  1. Read and agree to the terms of the Mathematica Site License. Print out the license agreement and sign it. This must be given to your Professor when you request a CD and a license number.
  2. See your professor for a CD and a license number
  3. Obtain a Password: In order to install Mathematica on your computer, you will need to obtain a password. You will need to provide the following information to Wolfram when you request a password:

License Number - the license number for your specific college provided by your PC Site License Coordinator
Identification - name, email address, phone number, college (i.e.: CUNY Hunter College)
MathID number and Machine Name - the MathID number will be automatically generated when you launch the Mathematica installer. This number is required in order to generate a password that will be unique to your computer. The machine name is your name (i.e.: Jane).

Request the Password - complete and submit the Mathematica Password Request at http://register.wolfram.com/. This form must be fully completed for your password to be properly processed. If you omit information from this form, you will not be able to receive your password.

Receiving your password - you will receive your password from your Campus Site License Coordinator via email. This password will allow you to fully install and run Mathematica on the computer for which it was requested. If Mathematica is installed on many computers (i.e.: home computer and laptop), each computer will need its own MathID and password. The password will expire each year on June 30th. You will automatically have a grace period of 14 days to allow time to receive your password.

Faculty

You may install Mathematica at home. You must complete the  home-use request form on Wolfram Research's website. Within this form, you have the choice of being sent a CD or downloading the software to your home computer. Each home-use license will have its own unique license number.

In order to begin the process you will need to enter the Hunter license number, which you may obtain in two ways:

  1. If you have Mathematica installed on your office computer, start the application and then in a new Notebook enter the $LicenseID command and execute it (Shift+Enter). Make a note of the license (Lnnnn-nnnn) that is output in response
  2. If you do not have Mathematica installed, please contact the Faculty/Staff Help Desk for the license ID.

Once you have completed the signup process a request will be sent to Hunter's License Administrator who will verify that the request is from a Hunter employee and then approve the license. Wolfram will then email the license notification directly to you with a download link if that was your choice; otherwise a CD will be mailed by Wolfram to your specified address.

During installation of Mathematica you will need to visit the Wolfram registration web site  to register the individual software license mailed to you, and request a password. Wolfram will email the password directly to you, using the email address you provided when requesting the software. The password will expire each year on August 31st. Upgrades are free but you will need to request a copy from Wolfram directly. No shipping charges will be incurred.
