Questions **CURRENTLY RECRUITING**We have two Questions studies currently recruiting participants for different age groups.
PARTICIPANT REQUIREMENTS: Ages 3;5-5;6 PURPOSE: The goal of this study is to understand how children learn to produce and understand simple and complex questions. LENGTH: The study consists of one 1-hour session. PROCEDURE: In this study, children play two games on the computer. The first one is a guessing game in which children see pictures on the computer screen and are prompted to ask questions about them (e.g. Look, this is juice. Someone drank the juice. Katie wants to find out who. She says…). The second one is a remembering game in which children hear questions and are asked to remember them (e.g. Let’s hear what Katie asks her brother… What did Katie want to know?). The goal of this study is to understand how children learn to produce simple (e.g. Who is drinking juice?) and complex questions (e.g. She wanted to know who is drinking juice), and to see whether monolingual and bilingual children differ in how they acquire the rules for question formation across time. At the end of the session, children are administered a standard test that measures expressive language development. BENEFITS: Our games are fun for children and give parents the opportunity to observe their children's language skills. Each child who participates receives a stuffed animal at the end of the session. PARTICIPANT REQUIREMENTS: Ages 2;0-3;2 PURPOSE: The goal of the study is to examine children's production of simple questions. LENGTH: The study consists of one 1-hour session. PROCEDURE: At the beginning of the session, the experimenter shows the child several popular picture books and initiates a conversation (approx. 20 mins). Next, the experimenter introduces a game in which she asks questions to a character toy "Freddy" who does not hear very well. The child is asked to repeat each question so that Freddy can hear it. BENEFITS: Our games are fun for children and give parents the opportunity to observe their children's language skills. Each child who participates receives a stuffed animal at the end of the session.
