Message to Guardians
We realize that sending your student to college is a time of remarkable transition for your family. While residing with us, most students go through an adjustment period of ups and downs. There are many resources available on campus to help your student manage this transition successfully.
At the Office of Residence Life our preference is to deal directly with the student. This enables us to establish a relationship with the student and helps us tremendously in getting to the root of the issues more efficiently. Needless to say, we welcome parent input and questions at any time, while also encouraging parents to support the involvement of the student in extracurricular activities.
Aside from that, we highly recommend consistent communication with your student, as we are obligated to protect the privacy and honor the students’ rights, pursuant to The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) . Ultimately, our goal is to provide guardians with the resources, which they can pass on to their student in hopes of constructing a healthy flow of communication.
It is of vital importance that students have as much support and encouragement from home as possible, while at the same time being allowed to mature through their own experiences. We hope that you build a strong rapport with your student and that you can serve as a sounding board, but let them handle their own problems as much as possible. Keep in mind that your student's success while at Hunter, and in future, is dependent upon their ability to function independently.
Please let us know how we can best serve you. We wish you a happy transition.
