Carol Oliver, Program Director
Welcome to the Ronald E. McNair Program:
I am the Program Director of the Ronald E. McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program at Hunter College, The City University of New York. The Ronald E. McNair Scholars program has helped countless students reach their academic and career goals by encouraging and preparing them for their graduate studies through involvement in research and scholarly activity. The Program was established by the United States Department of Education to commemorate Dr. Ronald E. McNair's exceptional accomplishments and dedication to scholarship. The intent is to promote opportunities for students who are underrepresented segments in graduate education by encouraging and preparing them for doctoral studies through personalized attention from staff and services to ensure students achieve their goals. In support of students' efforts to become researchers and faculty professors at the university level, the Hunter College McNair staff concentrates on providing quality services to ensure that participants graduate with a bachelor's degree, and acquire the necessary skills and knowledge for admission into graduate school.
Preparation and training makes a difference. Through our six-week Summer Institute and services provided year-round students are able to improve their academic performance in college, graduate school and beyond. Our program works closely with students to meet their specific needs and aspirations. Among the resources provided are mentored research, academic advising, advanced writing and research workshops, and assistance in securing admission to as well as financial support for enrollment in doctoral/graduate programs and summer research opportunities.
Candidates for the McNair Scholars Program must be low-income and be the first generation of their family to attend college -OR- students who are members of a group underrepresented in graduate education in the United States (African American/Black (non-Hispanic), Latino/Hispanic and American Indian/Alaskan Native/Pacific Islander) with a GPA or 3.0 or higher.
As Director of the McNair Scholars Program I dedicate my time to working with each student on a one-on-one basis and in scholarly groups to help enhance students research skills and their commitment to pursuing graduate studies.
