About MHSC

Our Work

New York City’s Mental Health Service Corps (MHSC) is a key initiative of Thrive NYC: A Mental Health Roadmap for All, which is a comprehensive public health approach to mental health designed to promote and protect the wellbeing of all New Yorkers. MHSC was conceived to address the significant gaps in mental health and substance use services available to New Yorkers by creating a corps of more than 300 behavioral health clinicians and approximately 100 support staff, including clinical supervisors, psychiatric consultants, and practice engagement specialists, who are placed in communities throughout the city. MHSC is helping to bring diversity to the city’s behavioral health care workforce and increase the accessibility of behavioral health care in the neighborhoods where it is needed most.

The MHSC Model
The Mental Health Service Corps model is to recruit, train, and embed early-career social workers, mental health counselors, and psychologists in primary care and behavioral health care practices throughout the city. Over the course of their three years of service, MHSC members help to implement evidence-based practices in the settings where they work and receive critical clinical experience toward full licensure in their profession. The health care providers that incorporate MHSC members into their practices increase their capacity to serve their patients more holistically, as well as to address the distinct mental health needs of some of the city’s most vulnerable populations.

MHSC is funded by the City of New York through the Research Foundation of CUNY and is overseen by the Department of Mental Health and Hygiene.

Our Mission, Vision, and Values

The mission of the Mental Health Service Corps is to increase the accessibility of quality behavioral health care in New York City’s highest-need communities. We accomplish through strengthening New York City’s behavioral health care workforce by supporting early-career clinicians in their professional development and driving innovation in behavioral health service delivery.

MHSC’s vision is to increase the overall wellbeing of all New Yorkers using an innovative, community-based approach to behavioral health care.

MHSC’s six core values are woven through every aspect of the program. Each staff member is expected to imbue these values in everything they do, from how they interact with patients, their families, and the communities where MHSC works to how they treat their colleagues.
