Welcome to the Music Department at Hunter College

Hunter Collage 2

The Department of Music at Hunter College, part of the City University of New York (CUNY), offers a variety of courses and degree programs catering to the needs of a diverse student body. Courses include a large selection of topics in music performance, theory, history, ethnomusicology, and music education. Private lessons are available on all instruments and voice, either with Hunter faculty members or with expert teachers outside the College. Most degrees can be completed in the evening, as well as during the day.

There are approximately 150 undergraduate music majors (B.Mus. and B.A.) and 80 M.A. students (in Composition, Ethnomusicology, Music History, Music Theory, Performance, and Music Education, via Hunter's Teacher Education Program) in the department. Classes for majors rarely include more than twenty students, and much individual attention is given to each student in the classroom.  In addition to academic courses and private lessons, the Music Department presents numerous events each semester, including concerts, guest lectures, master classes, and festivals on different themes.

NEWS:  We are extremely pleased to announce that the International Keyboard Institute & Festival, for the past 16 years at Mannes College, is moving to Hunter College this summer, in full partnership with our Music Department. Profs. Geoffrey Burleson and Quynh Nguyen will join the faculty, and both will be performing on the Masters Series in the Kaye Playhouse in a joint solo recital on July 20.  Other artists performing on the series include Marc-André Hamelin, Alessio Bax, and Xiayin Wang.

The IKIF will take place July 18-August 2. Please check out the website for Faculty Artists, Application, Schedule, Tuition, the MacKenzie Competition and more.

A limited number of full scholarships will be available to current Hunter College piano majors, and current Hunter students will have opportunities for free or half price tickets to Masters Series events in the Kaye.

Concerts tickets will be available online and in person at the Kaye Playhouse Office starting March 1.

NEWS:  Newly arrived in the Hunter Music Department! A 1969 William Dowd double manual harpsichord, based on a 1782 instrument by Shudi and Broadwood, in the Victoria and Albert Museum. It was the largest harpsichord made in England, and the sound of this instrument is righteously resplendent. The instrument itself was just very generously donated to us by a retired department faculty member, Evelyn Kugler.
