Barbara L. Hampton’s most
recent book (edited) is Through African-Centered
Prisms (critical essays on African American expressive
culture). She is one of the authors of Africa (vol.
1, The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music), African
American Sacred Music (vol. 3, the JVC Anthology
of Music and Dance in the Americas), African Musicology
(University of California Press), To the Far Corners
(Harmonie Press), Transformation and Resiliency
in Africa (Howard University Press) and other
books. She has also authored several articles on African
and African American traditional and popular music
and women musicians. Founder of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter
of the Society for Ethnomusicology (SEM), she served
as SEM's newsletter editor and as a member of its
council and national executive board. She founded
the Music and Gender Study Group of the International
Council of Traditional Music. She has served as a
member and/or chair of panels of the New York State
Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the
Arts, the Fulbright Fellowships Program and the National
Academy of Sciences (FF/NRC). Frequent appearances
on broadcast media include stations of the National
Public Radio, PBS (Great Performances) and the BBC.
