Hunter College Hosts Phi Beta Kappa's Citizenship and Partisanship Symposium on Saturday, October 19 Date: October 16, 2002 Hunter College will host Phi Beta Kappa's Middle Atlantic District conference, "Citizenship and Partisanship: Educating the Enlightened American," at 8:30 a.m., Saturday, October 19 in Room 714, Hunter College West Building on the southwest corner of 68th Street and Lexington Ave.
The event is open to registered Phi Beta Kappa members and their guests. The symposium's speakers will explore the relationship between public welfare and special interests and suggest a balanced solution within public and private needs.
Keynote speaker John Brademas, former congressman and New York University president emeritus, will address the conflicts between the agenda of public welfare and the will for individual pursuits and beliefs.
Joseph Gordon, Yale University dean of undergraduate education, will give a speech about social and political values in the classroom; Larry Kramer, NYU law professor, will talk about judicial sovereignty and American democracy; and U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) will discuss participating in a democratic society.
Hunter College President Jennifer J. Raab will give opening remarks.
"Although the tragedy of September 11 has engendered an exceptional measure of unity and common purpose in our nation, we are well aware of the rupture in contemporary American society between the ideals of citizenship and the realities of partisanship," said Howard Krukofsky, Hunter College professor and Phi Beta Kappa Middle Atlantic District President.
Krukofsky said the symposium will examine aspects of this dilemma. This symposium launches Phi Beta Kappa's National Conversation Project, "A Question of Relevance: The Social Value of the Liberal Arts." Phi Beta Kappa Society is a service organization committed to advocating liberal arts and sciences at the undergraduate level. It elects 15,000 new members a year from its 262 chapters.
