Hunter College High School will host New York City's first student government convention with the top schools in the city to discuss challenges, opportunities and establish a student leadership network on Saturday, March 8.

Student government representatives from Hunter College High School, Bronx Science, Brooklyn Tech,  Lycee Francais, Scarsdale High School, Stuyvesant and Townsend Harris will be participating in the convention from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hunter College High School, 71 East 94th Street, between Park and Madison Avenues.

The Student Government Convention will include speakers and presentations from each school and a series of workshops.  The first one will address specific student government positions, such as president and vice president, and allow students in those positions to share their experiences.  The second workshop will address issues such as the student governments' relationships with the administration and faculty of the school, dealings with the student body, school spirit, and the image and structure of the student government.

"We keep facing the same obstacles year after year in establishing ourselves as a respected decision-making body in the school," said Nora Gross, Hunter's recording secretary and the convention's committee planning chairwoman.  "Last year, we began to wonder whether the problem we faced were the same as other high school student governments.  As we contacted other schools, we realized how useful it would be for all of us to come together and learn from each other."

The convention has received support from a variety of places, including Hunter College, The New World Foundation, and the Mayor's office.

"High schools are where New York City's young people prepare to become our next generation of leaders," said Deputy Mayor Dennis Walcott, who will address the students during the convention.  "I could not be more proud to participate in the convention."
