The Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing is the flagship nursing program of the City University of New York. The School of Nursing is located on the Brookdale Campus of Hunter College, 425 E. 25^th Street at 1^st Avenue adjacent to The VA Hospital, Bellevue Hospital and NYU Medical Center. The Undergraduate program of study combines liberal arts and professional education with a humanistic and comprehensive approach to health care, leading to a Bachelor of Science degree.  On completion of the generic program, students are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN exam, the licensing examination for registered nurses.  The undergraduate program also provides a foundation for graduate study at the Master’s level, which is offered at the Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing.

The Generic Pathway consists of two parts:

·         liberal arts, general education requirements and prerequisite courses

·         professional nursing education

Students are considered for admission to the nursing in the fall semester only, after completing pre-requisite course work and an application to the School of Nursing.  Only those admitted to the School of Nursing are allowed to declare nursing as their major. Admission to the School of Nursing is very competitive. At present, 100 students are admitted annually and no one is guaranteed a seat into the program.  Students are required to attend the program on a full-time basis.

Composite score for admission to the nursing major is as follows:

·         Cumulative GPA (50%)

·         NLN Pre-RN exam score (50%)

The composite scores of all students applying for admission during an academic year are rank ordered from highest to lowest. Students will be accepted for admission based on this ranked composite score and the completion of all other admission requirements.  Applications that do not include all admission requirements will not be reviewed. Students must have a GPA of 3.0 or better in order to apply.

Admission decisions will be made in spring semester; however admission will be pending the completion of spring semester course work with the required GPA (due no later than June 1st). After admission, students must attend a mandatory orientation session in order to maintain their accepted status.

Clinical course schedules are determined by the School of Nursing based on resources and clinical facility availability. Clinical schedules may include day and/or evening hours, as well as any of the 7days of the week.  Criminal background checks may be required by the clinical facilities.  A student who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor will have to undergo investigation by the Office of Professional Discipline of New York State, which might result in RN licensure being withheld.

Prior to beginning any course work in the nursing major, students are required to submit documentation of: health insurance, medical/ immunization records, professional liability insurance, and CPR certification. These documents are to be updated at the beginning of each academic year.

The medical record must include a statement from a primary health care provider that a student is fully capable of participating in clinical practice.

Student fees may include: tuition, lab fees, textbooks, standardized exam fees, health and liability insurance, criminal background checks, uniforms, and medical equipment. 

Important Information

In order to participate in nursing clinical experiences, students must provide documentation of one of the following:

1)      U.S. Citizenship

2)      Permanent Residency

3)      International Student with F1 Status

4)      Granted Asylum, Refugee Status, Temporary Protected Status, Withholding of Removal, Deferred Enforced Departure*; or Deferred Action Status by the U.S. government

HOW AND WHEN TO APPLY TO HUNTER COLLEGE

All students must apply to Hunter College as an Undergraduate student in the lower division via one of the following two categories:

FIRST YEAR PREREQUISITE REQUIREMENTS

NURSING MAJOR APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS AND RULES

Please read the following rules of application carefully. You must meet all requirements below.

• Students must file a separate application for admission to the Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing through NursingCAS on https://portal.nursingcas.org
• Cumulative (all undergraduate grades from all courses from all schools) GPA of at least 3.0 by the end of the fall semester preceding nursing application. (on average admitted students have a GPA of 3.5)
• Pre-requisite courses may not be taken on a Credit/No Credit basis
• Prerequisite Course of Study with a minimum grade of “B” in the science courses:
• General Chemistry with lab (CHEM 100/101) or higher equivalent course
• Organic Chemistry with lab (CHEM 120/121) or higher equivalent course
• Introduction to Statistics (STAT 113) or higher equivalent course
• English Composition (ENGL 120)
• General Psychology (PSYCH 100)
• Human Development (Developmental Psychology of the Life Span) (PSYCH 150) 1 course  
• US History (HIST 151, HIST 152 or POLSC 110) 1 course
• May be enrolled in 4 of the pre-requisite courses during the Spring semester of application; however, must complete spring semester course work with a GPA of 3.0 or better and minimum grades of “B” or better in the science prerequisite courses no later than June 1^st.
• A career goal statement is required
• Completed at least 30 credits by the end of Summer session prior to beginning the nursing major
• Register for the National League for Nursing (NLN) RN Pre-Admission Exam (referred to as the NLN PAX exam) at the Hunter College Testing Center (150N) in January and pay the non-refundable exam fee
• Study for the NLN Pre-Admission Exam by purchasing the NLN Review Guide for RN Pre-Entrance Exam, editor: McDonald 3^rd edition, Jones and Bartlett Publishers, available in most bookstores
• NLN RN Pre-Admission exam  administered in February at Hunter College Testing Center (150N)
• You may apply online through NursingCAS on https://portal.nursingcas.org from Friday, November 30th through Friday, February 1st.  Applications are due no later than Friday, February 1st to NursingCAS.  Make sure to submit all transcripts to NursingCAS, including your Hunter College transcripts.  Please note that the deadline for the application is subject to change.
