PURPOSE

This full-day workshop is open to anyone interested in the education of health care professionals, including faculty and students of the health professions. The aim of the Narratives of Diversity interactive workshop will be to guide participants through a process of examining their personal and professional experiences with diversity and marginalization in order to bring a heightened awareness of these issues into academic and clinical environments.
The primary tools for this workshop will be prompted writing, reading, and sharing of reflective narratives on these issues. This approach will encourage participants to create a shared understanding of diversity, see through the eyes of others, and generate ideas for being more culturally responsive at both personal and institutional levels.

OBJECTIVES

•    Strengthen the proficiency and competency of health professions faculty and students, as well as health care professionals, in the use of expressive writing as a tool for reflection
•    Create opportunities for a continued focus on issues of diversity and marginalization, using these tools in on-line environments
•    Use “lessons learned” to improve both academic and clinical environments to better serve a diverse population
