Dear Incoming Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing Students:

We are excited to advise you of a new partnership between Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing/CUNY and NSLIJ Lenox Hill Hospital.

The Institute of Medicine (IOM), the National League for Nursing (NLN) and the American Association of Colleges in Nursing (AACN) have all identified the need to increase the number of nursing students, who on graduation, are ready to enter the workforce in a seamless fashion.  Healthcare organizations need to assure that newly graduated nurses are competent and can function to the extent of their scope of practice. Nursing education and healthcare organizations must join forces to design and evaluate creative, collaborative strategies to improve undergraduate education to enhance patient safety and quality.

One partnership strategy is the Dedicated Education Unit (DEU) model. Dedicated education units are carefully selected patient care units that provide opportunities for students to learn in a receptive and nurturing environment. These units are the result of academic/hospital partnerships and require commitment and resources from both parties. Dedicated Education Units help student nurses gain real-world, hands-on experience with patients and staff nurses. Students will be assigned exclusively to the DEU during all of the Adult Health Courses’ clinical rotations. Students will have opportunities to work one-on-one to provide patient care with DEU staff nurses who will serve as clinical preceptors.  Clinical rotations to specialty areas including maternity, pediatrics, and psychiatric mental health nursing will be arranged on units other than the DEU. In order to be considered for this clinical placement experience the following criteria must be met:

  1. GPA: 3.5 or higher.
  2. Excellent Interpersonal Skills- verbal and written.
  3. Demonstrates self-direction and self motivation in learning.
  4. Personal Interview with Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing/CUNY Faculty, and Nursing Education Staff at NSLIJ Lenox Hill Hospital.
