The Interprofessional Training and Education at Cornell-Hunter (ITEACH) project was a public-private partnership between Hunter College and the Weill Cornell Medical College that was formed in 2010 by an interprofessional team of faculty with support from the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation (2010-2014). The ITEACH team worked together to design, implement and institutionalize interprofessional education (IPE) experiences to provide our students with the competencies in collaborative teamwork and communication that are necessary for the delivery of high quality care, particularly to underserved patient populations in community-based settings.

ITEACH worked with educators from nursing, public health, social work, medicine, and other health professions on incorporating interprofessional, team-based learning experiences to develop student competencies in patient-centered teamwork and communication, enhance understanding of the values of different professional roles and identities, and promote collaborative behavior to improve the delivery of patient care.

ITEACH curricular resources include suggestions for teaching IPE using simulation, patient visits, patient narratives, and e-learning. Together, these IPE resources help to promote a deeper understanding of qualities associated with high-performance healthcare teams. Methods of instruction include group lectures/discussions, interactive e-learning modules in IPE featuring an unfolding patient case, simulation scenarios for interprofessional learning, visits to hospitals and community clinics to meet with patients, and written assignments.
