Buffalo State College is seeking candidates for the position of Director of the Center for Excellence in Urban and Rural Education (CEURE), which is dedicated to improving instruction for children in urban and rural schools in Western New York. The ultimate goal of the Center for Excellence in Urban and Rural Education (CEURE) is to improve instruction for children attending urban and rural schools in Western New York. Through initiatives in teacher recruitment, teacher retention, school reform, and staff development, the Center provides leadership in urban and rural teacher education. Currently, CEURE promotes more than 35 initiatives partnering with 133 schools in nine counties in conjunction with nearly 100 Buffalo State College faculty members. Since its inception, the Center has secured federal and private grants totaling over $13 million. The Director of CEURE holds a 12-month calendar year appointment and reports to the Dean of the School of Education.

Responsibilities:

  • expand Buffalo State College’s collaboration with urban and rural schools across the nine counties of Western New York to prepare teachers, advance curriculum and instruction, and develop other educational services;
  • identify teaching and service opportunities for education majors within urban and rural settings;
  • provide inspirational leadership to College faculty and staff in order to generate broad support for, and participation in, CEURE endeavors, including research related to urban and rural education;
  • support faculty and staff initiatives regarding recruitment, retention, reform, staff development, and improved instruction in urban and rural schools;
  • form partnerships with those interested in improving education in the Western New York community;
  • lead CEURE in impacting the development of educational policy at the local, state and national levels,
  • secure grants and other private funds to support CEURE activities; and
  • provide day-to-day administration of the Center;
  • teach at least one School of Education course per semester, and
  • maintain a continuing scholarly agenda.

Required Qualifications:

  • doctorate from an accredited institution;
  • established record of scholarship in the area of urban and/or rural education sufficient to qualify for faculty appointment in a department of the College at the rank of associate professor or professor;
  • ability to provide high-impact, facilitative leadership to a variety of constituent groups, both internal and external to the college;
  • experience in fostering collaboration between college/teacher education and PK-12 schools in urban and/or rural settings;
  • successful fundraising experience, particularly with grant applications;
  • ability to work effectively with faculty across disciplines in a collegial manner;
  • effective interpersonal, organizational, administrative, advocacy, and communication skills.
  • experience with teacher education programs.

  • successful record of teaching, administration, scholarship, and/or collaboration in urban schools;

ASSOCIATE IN BILINGUAL EDUCATION, SG-26

The Office of Elementary, Middle, Secondary and Continuing Education seeks a candidate to fill the vacancy of Associate in Bilingual Education, Grade 26.

The Office of Bilingual Education has responsibility for the coordination and implementation of Department policies and programs that meet the educational needs of English language learners and limited English proficient students. The responsibilities of this office have increased significantly with the implementation of the No Child Left Behind legislation and the Board of Regents emphasis on increasing student achievement for the LEP/ELL student population. Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide technical assistance to local school administrators, teachers, parents and the general public.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: This will be a provisional appointment pending a Civil Service examination. Qualified candidates must have a master’s degree in education and five years of professional experience, as follows: 3 years of New York State teaching experience in a bilingual education program for limited English proficient students in grades K-12, and 2 years of administrative or supervisory experience in the field of bilingual education or English as a second language. Candidates with a doctorate in education (Ed.D./Ph.D.) may waive the 3 years of teaching experience but must fulfill the 2 years of administrative or supervisory experience requirement.

POSITION DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES
The School of Education of Hunter College-CUNY invites applicants for a tenure-track position in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) effective September 2007. The College places a high priority upon research and teaching experience with an expectation that candidates will also be active in the profession.

Responsibilities include:
• Teach graduate TESOL and applied linguistics courses to prospective and in-service TESOL K-12 and adult education professionals in the School of Education.

Announces Vacancy:Title: Resource Specialist (full-time or part-time availability)

Responsibilities: To work closely with the Director and Staff in providing technical assistance and professional development to schools, school districts and Regions in the boroughs of Manhattan and Staten Island as well as District 75 (Citywide Special Education), and to assist in disseminating teaching and learning resources for English Language Learners (ELLs) which would include providing technical assistance workshops on applications for state and federal programs; to direct technical assistance to administrative personnel and key staff, and to design professional development activities to help teachers and Principals become better informed with regards to the education of ELLs.

Qualifications: A minimum of five years of classroom or related experience serving ELLs in NYS is required. Masters degree in bilingual education, TESOL or related field is necessary. Must be certified in Bilingual Education or English as a Second Language (ESL). Also notable oral and written communication skills are necessary. Bilingual proficiency is also a must. Expertise in the education of students with limited English proficiency, English as a second language and Native Language Arts Standards and in the education of content subjects through native language or ESL turnkey training is a plus. BETAC Staff should be knowledgeable about the State and federal laws and regulations affecting Limited English Proficient (LEP) students (Commissioner’s Regulations Part 154 and No Child Left Behind, Title III), and issues related to access, equity and excellence for LEP students. Some administrative experience is helpful.

The New York State Education Department, Office of Elementary, Middle, Secondary and Continuing Education seeks candidates to fill the vacancy of Associate in Instructional Services, Grade 26. This position is part of the Intra/Interagency Collaborations Team that is responsible for fulfilling the regulations of the Reading First legislation under the No Child Left Behind Act. In addition, the Intra/Interagency Team is responsible to coordinate professional development training on the New York State Learning Standards for Schools Under Registration Review (SURR); implement the School Quality Review Initiative; conduct external site reviews; and develop partnerships with agencies and community-based organizations, which support initiatives to close the achievement gap. Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:• Provide leadership to school districts on the Reading First initiative in consultation with other education offices on improving early literacy in kindergarten through grade three and ensure that the curriculum in the schools is consistent with scientifically-based reading research;

  • Provide technical assistance in early reading instruction in grade k-3, in particular with low performing schools;
  • Assist with Reading First Academy online professional development program;
  • Prepare written materials, including correspondence, reports and monographs to assist in the development and implementation of school improvement programs;
  • Prepare materials and provide technical assistance for conducting presentations to administrators, teachers, parents and others on the New York State Learning Standards in particular with low performing schools;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must be reachable for a permanent appointment on the Civil Service list for Associate in English Language Arts or eligible for transfer. In the event the eligible list is exhausted, a provisional appointment may be made pending a new Civil Service examination. To qualify for a provisional appointment, candidates must have a Master’s degree AND permanent or professional New York State certification in Childhood Education 1-6 AND five years of certified teaching experience in Childhood Education 1-6.
