Satisfactory Academic Progress for New York State Financial Aid Programs

Financial Aid Certification Tracking System (FACTS)

Students must make Satisfactory Academic Progress towards their degrees, as defined by New York State, in order to continue to receive New York State aid including APTS and TAP. For New York State aid, "Satisfactory Academic Progress" consists of two elements: academic progress and pursuit of program. Academic progress is a measure of earning credits toward a degree with a specified grade point average. Pursuit of program is a measure of the student's degree completion.

Students will be measured against the Satisfactory Academic Progress standard at the end of each term to determine eligibility for receipt of  New York State student financial assistance for the upcoming year. This is a complete review of all semesters with attendance, whether or not any New York State student aid was received.

Reinstatement of Good Academic Standing:

Students who have lost good academic standing may restore this standing in one of the following ways:

  • Make up past academic deficiencies by completing one or more semesters without receiving any state aid.
  • Be readmitted to Hunter College after an absence of at least one calendar year (contingent upon grade point average requirement).
  • Transfer to another college.
  • Apply for a one-time waiver of the TAP academic requirements if you have not previously received a TAP waiver.

Appealing for a Waiver of Satisfactory Academic Progress Standards for New York State Aid

The TAP Waiver Provision permits qualified students to receive a one-time waiver of the Satisfactory Academic Progress requirement as an undergraduate student. The TAP Waiver Provision does not exist to provide one additional term of eligibility for all students who fail to meet pursuit of progress requirements. It is expected that most students who fail to meet pursuit of progress requirements will not be granted the waiver and hence will not receive any further New York State awards until they have regained good academic standing.

Students who wish to appeal for a waiver of the Satisfactory Academic Progress standards should visit the Office of Financial Aid to obtain an appeal form along with instructions. Appeals will be evaluated for extenuating circumstances such as personal illness, injury, personal tragedy, and the reasonableness of the student's capability for improvement to meet the appropriate standard for the degree program in which the student is enrolled.

  • The waiver is not automatic.
  • The waiver is intended only to accommodate extraordinary or unusual cases.
  • The waiver will be granted only when there is a reasonable expectation that the student will meet future requirements.
