Institutional Scholarships

Students interested in applying for Hunter’s internal scholarships are required to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) ever year. We also strongly recommend completing the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) and the Excelsior Scholarship application. To apply for TAP and/or the Excelsior Scholarship you and/or your parent must be a NYS resident. Both applications can be found of the HESC Webpage.

FAFSA years:

    1. Entering freshman and/ or current or transfer students – Complete 17-18 FAFSA
    2. Entering freshman and/or transfer students for Fall’18 – Complete 18-19 FAFSA (opening on October 1st 2017)

Please note: Scholarship applicants must have a valid FAFSA to be eligible for internal scholarships at Hunter College. In most cases students may be selected to submit additional documentation which must be processed to fully disburse an internal scholarship. Applicants must be mindful of their CUNYfirst “To Do List” to ensure additional documents are not required. If an applicant is awarded a scholarship and it is determined additional documents are required the scholarship will remain pending until a valid FAFSA is processed.

Most scholarships are awarded based on the following criteria:

  • Merit
  • Need
  • Enrollment
  • Declaration of a Major and/or course of study

In most cases, scholarships are awarded on a yearly basis and split into two equal disbursements, half in the fall and the other half in the spring. Scholarships can also be awarded for one term only, either fall or spring. We recommend all students to be mindful of their award amount, posting, and eligibility requirements. Please be advised, scholarships awarded in the fall are not always guaranteed in the spring.

Private Scholarships and Grants

There are a variety of external scholarships and grants available to students. Most do not need to be repaid and are offered by schools, employers, individuals, private companies, nonprofits, communities, religious groups, and professional/social organizations. Most organization will request information from your FAFSA as well as your enrollment, grade point average, etc. All documents which need confirmation of enrollment and/or financial aid should be submitted to and completed by the Office of Registrars and/or Financial Aid. You are also to complete and attach an Information Release Form to all paperwork in which we must provide confidential information of your student record. Please note all requests for information cannot be sent directly to the organization. The student will have to pick up the document from the Office of Financial Aid. To search for an outside scholarship you can use our recommended webpages:

Please be informed documentation from the outside organization must be on official company letterhead and should be sent to the Office of Financial Aid, Registrars or Bursar's Office (if applicable). All paperwork must be received at least 3-4 month prior to the bill due date. Contingent on their approval your outside scholarship (payment) should arrive to the Office of Bursars (billing and payments) one week prior to tuition due dates to allow enough time to validate the scholarship and post it to your account.
