Italian Heritage and Culture Month Event

Invaded from all sides for millennia, bombarded during World War II, living with the curse of Mafia and suffering one of the highest unemployment rates in Europe—Italy's deep south is its poorest region. This reality has always been reflected in the simple local cuisine, home to some of the most delicious cheeses and meats in southern Italy, which have received special attention over the years as well as harnessing European food trademark status.

Join us for a discussion about the foods and food culture of Basilicata, the region home to Matera, the European Capital of Culture 2019. (Sample foods from local producers will be served.)

Sample foods from local producers paired with wines from the region including one of Italy's most respected wines, Aglianico del Vulture. Talks will also give an overview of the region’s history highlighting how the city of Matera went from its past as an abandoned slum to one of Europe’s cities of the future.

When: Thursday, October 24, 6-8 pm
Where: Casa Lally, 132 East 65th Street (between Lexington and 3rd Avenue)
Cost: $45
