A comprehensive look at the department's offerings including consideration of:

Courses are arranged in 6 groups, lettered A-F. Asterisked notes are referenced.

PHILO 101, PHILO 104, & PHILO 106 may carry the “W” designation, depending on the section. PHILO 103 will never bear that designation. All these courses have no pre-requisite, but students must have ENGL 120 as a co-requisite, if they have not successfully passed it already.

(B) PHILO 171, PHILO 201, PHILO 212, PHILO 214, PHILO 215, PHILO 218, PHILO 220, PHILO 225, PHILO 228, PHILO 244, PHILO 246, PHILO 248, PHILO 250 , PHILO 252, PHILO 254, PHILO 256, PHILO 258, PHILO 262, PHILO 268,& PHILO 270: All have the pre-requisites of at least 1 course in philosophy (one of the courses in [A]) and ENGL 120. All of these courses count toward the philosophy major. Save for PHILO 171, they all satisfy Stage 3 or “Focused Exposure” of the GER and thus carry the “W” designation. Only PHILO 201 satisfies Category V of the Distribution Requirement.*

(C) Save for PHILO 244, PHILO, 246, PHILO 248, PHILO 250, PHILO 252, PHILO 256, PHILO 258, PHILO 262, PHILO 268, PHILO 270, PHILO 275, & PHILO 279, all courses in [B] satisfy Group 4 of the Pluralism & Diversity (P&D) Requirement. PHILO 216 & PHILO 230 count toward the major and satisfy as well Group 3 of the P&D Requirement. PHILO 219 counts toward the major and satisfies Group 1 of the P&D Requirement. PHILO 226 counts toward the major and satisfies Group 2 of the P&D Requirement.

(D) PHILO 275 and PHILO 279 count toward the major, but do not satisfy Stage 3 or “Focused Exposure” of the GER or carry the “W” designation.

(E) All PHILO courses at the 300-level have the pre-requisites of at least 2 courses in philosophy and ENGL 120. These courses count toward the major or Stage 3, Focused Exposure, of the the GER.***

(F) All PHILO courses at the 400-level have the pre-requisites of at least 3 courses in philosophy, ENGL 120, and permission of the instructor. These courses (“Independent Study,” “Honors Tutorial,” & “In-Service Learning”) count toward the major exclusively. Only full-time faculty members can be instructors of 400-level philosophy courses.
