Welcome to the Department of Philosophy
Philosophy develops the human capacities for creative and rational thought and brings them to bear on the most fundamental questions that we ask—questions about individual and social action, the possibility and limits of knowledge, the truth and justification of beliefs, human nature and freedom, the existence of God, and the operations of nature.
Hunter's Philosophy Department specializes in a diverse range of philosophical topics and traditions, with particular strengths in social and political philosophy and the history of Western philosophy. In addition to the standard major and minor, we also offer a major in Philosophy, Politics, and Society.
If you're thinking about majoring or minoring in philosophy, or even just taking a course or two, you may want to visit our Why Study Philosophy? page.
