The Microscopy Laboratory at Hunter College
We are developing innovative visualization technologies for investigating the structure and function of neuronal systems. There are three research areas currently at focus. 1) Probing microtubules in the axon of retinal ganglion cell. We recently demonstrated the use of second-harmonic generation for visualization of the retinal nerve fibers, which allows us to elucidate early pathogenic events of glaucoma. 2) Label-free imaging of myelin in vivo. We employ the nonlinear process of third-harmonic generation to study neuron-glial cell interactions underlying myelination. 3) Imaging gene expression dynamics in live mouse brain. We are testing newly developed fluorescent proteins for visualizing the neuronal network.
