Seminar in Political Theory
POLSC 304.10: Aristotle: Nature and Ethics of The Political
Dr. T.L. Popejoy
3 hrs, 3 cr. Prereq: ENGL 120 and one course in political theory or permission of
intructor
What underlies the concept of "the political" in Western thought? What is its nature and "ethos"? Through a detailed survey of Aristotle's work and its resonances in contemporary political theory, the seminar will inquire into early articulations of this concept. We will consider Aristotle's conception of the political as it is found in its constituent elements of phusis (nature), ethos, and logos. In addition to primary reading from De Anima, the Nichomachean Ethics, the Physics and Metaphysics, the Analytics and the Politics, the seminar will include readings from Rancière, Marx, Arendt, Derrida, MacIntyre, Heidegger and others.
