SUNY Downstate Early Medical Education(EME) and Exploring Health Careers (EHC) Program recruitment sessions

The Early Medical Education Program (EME) is an initiative to increase the academic competitiveness of undergraduate pre-medical students, early in their college career. The program is designed to provide medical science lectures and academic support through a 4-week, summer enrichment program for the first two summers and a 6-week, pre-matriculation program for the third summer. Students are selected from one of the participating linkage schools. Once accepted into EME, if students meet the program requirements they are granted a guaranteed acceptance into SUNY Downstate's College of Medicine. EHC is an initiative to expose students to a variety of career options in the health professions. The program is designed to provide exposure to targeted health professions through faculty presentations, shadowing opportunities in clinics and affiliate sites, and information about the application process. The professions highlighted during the program include: medicine, allied health, graduate studies, and nursing.

SUNY Downstate's Physician Assistant Program Information Session

The two-year, full-time program is designed to provide the academic and clinical foundations for primary-care Physician Assistants; to foster the development of the attitudes, values, and behavior appropriate for professional health-care providers; and to prepare students to participate in a team approach to patient care. Emphasis is placed on student understanding of the role and responsibilities of Physician Assistants in the provision of quality health service, in the treatment and management of disease states, in meeting the health care needs of a richly diverse patient population and in fostering health promotion and disease prevention. The program, which begins in late May or early June, offers a 27-month, upper-division professional course of study leading to the B.S. degree. The curriculum integrates the basic sciences, social sciences, medical sciences, and clinical experiences needed to provide a comprehensive introduction to the practice of medicine.

PRE-HEALTH FILE WORKSHOP FOR COMMITTEE LETTER APPLICANTS

If you are planning to apply for a Committee Letter during the 2015-2016 application cycle and DO NOT have a Pre-Health file with our office, please respond to this email IMMEDIATELY. We will be having another mandatory workshop on Friday February 13th from 1:00pm-3:00pm for those students who need to start a Pre-Health file for the upcoming 2015-2016 Professional schools application cycle. You must have a Pre-Health file to apply for a Committee Letter or Letter Packet. We will not provide you with a Committee Letter or Letter Packet without a Pre-Health file. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE. Please note that this Pre-Health File workshop is only open to students planning to apply during the 2015-2016 application cycle to medical, dental, optometry, veterinary and podiatry schools. SPURS-Columbia University Medical Center Biomedical Research Summer Program

The SPURS program provides intense research fellowship experiences on the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons campus to undergraduate students from Universities in the City of Greater New York. The experience is intended to (a) provide meaningful training in biomedical research, and (b) enhance the students’ ability to achieve a career in biomedical research and/or medicine by pursuing an advanced degree (either Ph.D., M.D./ Ph.D. or M.D.). In addition to specific training in the indicated research area, the students receive in-depth training in biomedical research methodology, including: (a) the design and analysis of experiments, (b) a critical reading of the scientific literature, through journal clubs, (c) the presentation of scientific results at laboratory meetings, (d) attendance at convened poster sessions, (e) the preparation of abstracts and manuscripts describing the results of experiments, and (f) career counseling and research ethics.

The Final Committee Letter Workshop of 2015 will be held on Thursday, March 5th, 2015 from 3pm-5pm. In order to submit a Committee Letter Application and receive either a committee letter or letter packet you must attend one of the workshops. Personal Statement and Application Workshop

The Hunter Pre-Health Advising Office and the Post-Bacc Community are co-hosting a workshop to help students effectively revise and edit their professional school applications and personal statements. While you have all successfully turned in our committee letter applications, the ordeal of transforming this rough-draft into a polished and effective application to medical, dental, veterinary school has only just begun. In this workshop, Dr. Phillips will present strategies for utilizing feedback from peers and mentors in effectively revising your applications. Three recent successful professional school applicants will join us to describe their revision procedures and what they learned from the experience. Before and after examples of their experience descriptions and personal statements will be used as illustrations of the transformation their applications underwent in the process.

Dr. Joel Oppenheim MD/PhD Talk

Dr. Joel Oppenheim, Senior Associate Dean for Biomedical Science and Professor of Microbiology at New York University School of Medicine is visiting Hunter College to talk to students pursuing pre-med, pre-MD/PhD, or PhDs in the medical fields. He has served on NYU's M.D. and M.D./Ph.D. Admissions Committees, and he chairs the Ph.D. Admissions Committee. He is the founder and organizer of the "What Can You Be With a Ph.D.?" Symposium, and one of the founding program directors of The Leadership Alliance (1992), a consortium of collaborating minority-serving colleges and major research universities committed to increasing graduate-level underrepresented minorities in all disciplines. Peer Health Exchange Vounteering Information Session

The Peer Health Exchange’s mission is to give teenagers the knowledge and skills they need to make healthy decisions. The Peer Health Exchange trains college students to teach a health curriculum in low-income high schools that lack comprehensive health education.
