Established in 1982, the Public Service Scholar
Program introduces up to 24 Hunter College students each year
to careers in public service. Participants are selected each spring
for the coming academic year. Women, minorities and immigrant
students, who traditionally have been underrepresented in public
policy-making positions, are especially encouraged to apply.
The program combines
a yearlong internship of twenty hours a week in a public or nonprofit
agency with two seminars on issues important to the future of
New York City. Special events such as tours, guest lectures and
career workshops enhance the program.
The program includes:
 |
A one-year, 20 hour/week internship
in a public or nonprofit agency or office of a government
official; |
 |
Two required weekly seminars
which focus on issues relating to public policy, advocacy
work, and social and political matters of importance to NYC; |
 |
18 credits in Urban Studies toward
an undergraduate degree; |
 |
A $6,000 stipend; |
 |
A mentor
who is a Hunter College graduate. |
To qualify you must:
 |
Be within 45 credits of graduation; |
 |
Have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher; |
 |
Complete the application and interview
process. |
The program is open to any Hunter College undergraduate,
regardless of major.
