Rome: Gypsies and integration
Daria Pessina, Minister of Justice, Statistical Bureau, Genova (Italy)

Gypsies have been living in Rome for many centuries. In spite of common idea that gypsies are all immigrates, we well know that this is not the truth. It's not important underline how many immigrated gypsies live in Rome, but their bad life conditions in abandoned areas and their difficult interaction with other inhabitants. As long as gypsies live segregated in special camps or in abandoned areas, will be not possible to arrive at a best their inclusion in the city and not necessarily in our society. The aim of the study is not the degree of segregation for gypsy
communities, but the geographical localization of their settlements in Rome and conflicts with the people in the neighbourhood, through the readings of the newspaper.
