THE ROME, ITALY / NYC, USA
COLLABORATION PROGRAM
Introduction
As part of our Cooperative Agreement with the University of Rome, there will be a Meeting at the University of Rome in June 2000 “University of Rome/Hunter College Comparative Urban Projects” (Cooperative Agreement). All Hunter faculty, researchers, adjuncts, all New York State and New York City Municipal officials, and all interested parties are urged to attend this meeting. All papers and abstracts, whether attending the meeting or not, are encouraged and are welcome, and will be posted on our web site. It is also important to emphasize that thanks to email, our new web site, and many other vehicles, one can fully participate in this cooperative program without necessarily attending the Rome meeting, and all at Hunter, as well as interested municipal officials, are thereby encouraged to do so!
This description outlines the scope of the Rome Meeting and ways that you can be involved. For Hunter faculty, President Caputo is making funds available, in the form of Presidential Fellowships, for 8 full-time Hunter faculty to travel to the meeting in Rome, and the Romans will pay the Hotel and related expenses for these faculty in Rome. For the procedures for applying for these Presidential Fellowships, please contact Dr. Victor Goldsmith, Hunter Coordinator of this meeting.
Following our very successful meeting at Hunter this past June, The ‘Romans’ are inviting us to meet in Rome as part of the formal agreement of
cooperation between the College and the University of Rome. (You may see some of the exciting moments captured from the June 1999 meeting at Hunter, in the form of photos, at our newly revised web site: http://www.hunter.cuny.edu/rome-nyc/nycpictures.html)We have tentatively, jointly developed the following topics, organizational structure and protocols for the Rome Meeting:
1. Date: June 19 - 23, 2000
2. For support of a limited number of Hunter faculty to attend this meeting, please contact Dr. Victor Goldsmith
3. There will be an opening session, five half day sessions, a one day field trip led by our Roman colleagues to study ‘contemporary Italian culture and sports,’ and one free day for you to pursue your own areas of interest.
4. The five half day sessions will each be devoted to one theme, as follows:
a. Urban Environmental pollution
b. Water supply and quality/aqueducts
c. Social determinants of urban public health
d. Cities in the city: Identity and governance
e. Immigration and integration
5. Each side will choose a session co-chair, who will work closely together with their counterpart, and will prepare a joint keynote paper to open the session. Additional papers will be accepted and presented. The panel co-chairs will coordinate each of their sessions. If you wish to participate as a co-chair and help to organize a session, please let me know.
6. All papers must be written and prepared one month prior to the meeting, and the Italians will prepare a publication of these papers for the meeting. We will put all papers on our net site for the information and use of all faculty and students at both our institutions.
7. Efforts will be made to involve our respective municipalities. A letter will be prepared at the end of the meeting which will include a summary of what we know, and recommendations to our respective cities.
8. At the Rome meeting, we will discuss, and prepare a detailed outline for a joint book to be composed of the latest research and which will be based upon the papers to be presented at the next annual meeting, in NYC in the year 2001. (I have entered into discussions with NY Academy of Sciences for the publication of this book.)In summary, each participant is encouraged to develop and contribute research, as well as participate in an exciting group project that involves sharing, merging and blending of ideas. Through this interaction, we will develop a greater understanding of each cities urban problems.
