"Gypsies and gagé: is integration a possible process?"
Marco Brazzoduro, University of Rome "La Sapienza", Faculty of Statistics, Demographic Science Department

Starting from a description of the present living conditions of gypsies in Rome, scattered in illegal and poorest camp sites throughout the city, the paper focuses on the way of a tentative integration which is supposed to be hingered upon jobs, housing and schooling. The last is then particularly developed taking into account the process and the outcome of a research made in a primary school throughout a whole year. The main goals were: a. to evaluate the results gained by the gypsy children under scrutiny; b. to spot the points regarding to which the school system is lacking the correct approach; c. to suggest the possible strategy and means enabling the improvement of the still largely inadequate process.
