Early Childhood Special Education Fieldwork & Student Teaching

The Early Childhood Special Education program prepares candidates for professional roles in classrooms, homes, and communities across the birth through grade 2 age range. Intensive field-based practice is a critical component of the program and designed to provide reflective experiences in order to develop competencies in working with young children of diverse ages, abilities, cultures, and languages. These experiences are purposely sequenced so candidates learn new competencies that build upon those acquired in earlier experiences. Candidates complete the following field experiences over the course of the program:

ECC 71200: Pre-Student Teaching Field Placements in Early Childhood (1 credit). Candidates spend 10 full days in an early childhood general education setting.

Note:

·  ECC 712 is not required for candidates in Program 2

·  ECC 703 is a prerequisite for ECC 712

·  Waivers/exemptions for ECC 712 are rare and will only be considered when a candidate has taken a similar, supervised field experience. Early childhood work experience does not qualify as justification for a waiver/exemption.

SPEDE 77600: Introductory Field Experience in Early Childhood Special Education (2 credits). Candidates spend 10 full days in a Kindergarten or grade 1 or 2 setting where at least three children with IEPs are participating in the classroom.

Note:

· ECC 712 is a prerequisite (Program 1 candidates only)

· SPEDE 770 is a pre/co-requisite

· Waivers/exemptions are not an option

OR

SPEDE 77910: Initial Practicum in Early Childhood Special Education (2 credits)

Candidates are required to engage in the field experience for three full days per week for the entire semester.

Note:

·  SPEDE 776 is a prerequisite for SPEDE 77810 or SPEDE 77910

·  Waivers/exemptions are not an option

SPEDE 77820: Final Student Teaching in Early Childhood Special Education (2 credits)

OR

SPEDE 77920: Final Practicum in Early Childhood Special Education (2 credits)

Candidates are required to engage in the field experience for three full days per week for the entire semester.

Note:

· SPEDE 774 and either SPEDE 778.10 or SPEDE 779.10 are prerequisites for SPEDE 77820 or SPEDE 77920

·  Waivers/exemptions are not an option
