TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)

The Office of Adolescent and TESOL Clinical Experiences assigns graduate students to New York City public schools to fulfill their student teaching requirements.

Hunter College is an urban teaching program; all field placements take place in New York City public schools.

Student Teaching

Student teaching is the culminating fieldwork experience in the TESOL program. Graduate students who have completed or are in the process of completing 30 credits,  and who have passed the required New York State Certification Exams may apply for student teaching. Students must apply for student teaching by the deadlines determined by the Hunter College School of Education. In student teaching, teacher candidates are assigned to a cooperating teacher in their subject at a New York City public school.  They work full-time Monday through Friday for the entire school day under the guidance of their cooperating teacher. TESOL student teachers have two placements, one at the elementary level (K-6) and one at the secondary level, over the course of two semesters. Student teachers are observed by a Hunter College field supervisor four times each semester.

The TESOL Practicum is a 1-credit course. Applicants for practicum must be full-time teachers, teaching a full-day schedule of ESL classes five days a week. They must have completed (or be in the process of completing) 30 credits.  They must also have completed the  required NYS certification examinations, and 100 hours of fieldwork in approved courses.   Practicum students are observed by a Hunter College field supervisor two times each semester.
