Denise L.W. Simmons received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Psychology from John Jay College, The City University of New York. She began her career at Hunter College as a full- time faculty member and Counselor for the SEEK Department, in 1983. In 1994 she became the Director of Tutorial Services for the SEEK Department. Ms. Simmons supervises S.A.C., the SEEK Academic Center and Computer Lab, and coordinates supplemental instruction with the various Hunter College Academic Support Centers, such as The Dolciani Math Center and The Chanin Language Center. She has initiated several Learning Styles-centered approaches in assisting under-prepared and non-proficient student populations. Ms. Simmons advocates for the augmentation of computer literacy and computer-assisted learning and founded the SEEK PLATO program.
Teaching
Ms. Simmons’ teaching experiences include: Freshmen Orientation (11 years) and the curriculum design and teaching of Stress Management (4 years), a three credit experimental undergraduate course offered through Health Education, Sociology and Psychology, and an adapted version of the latter in Continuing Education; two semesters of Sociology and Social Skills at Berkeley College NYC.
Research and Service
Ms. Simmons interests include family advocacy for emotionally disabled children, family therapy for ADHD and ADD adolescents, non-drug-related techniques for the attention disorders, and educational parity for the ODD child.
Her primary research interests include stress management and academic performance, the onset of Adolescent Operational Defiance Disorder. Other interests relate to health and emotional status as indicators of academic success and cultural patterns of learning.
Ms. Simmons is affiliated with NYC Children and Family Services and the New York Urban League.
