Prof. Jorge Fuentes has a BA from CCNY, an MS in Counselor Education from Lehman College, and an EdD in Student Development from Grambling University. He joined the SEEK faculty in 1972 as a Counselor, and he was the Chair/Director of SEEK for eight years.
Teaching
Prof. Fuentes has developed an active learning instructional methodology that utilizes group work and video technology to engage students in classroom discussions. This instructional approach was developed specifically to eliminate the “herd effect” that can arise in block programs. The methodology had been presented at several conferences where it has been well received.
Research
Prof. Fuentes initiated the use of block programming in the SEEK Program in 1975 and his research efforts have led to the development of a comprehensive retention model that has made Hunter SEEK the most successful of all the SEEK Programs in CUNY. In addition to the block program (which was adopted by Hunter for all its students in 1993), he has also developed a curriculum for SEEK’s freshman orientation course that is based on the assessed needs of SEEK students. The curriculum was embedded in the Freshman Orientation and Development Workbook he published in 1994, the same year he was honored by the New York Metropolitan Association for Developmental Education as Educator of the Year for his work on block programming. His dissertation on block programming was based on a longitudinal study that he conducted The CUNY’s Board of Trustees passed a resolution recommending block programming to all of its campuses in 1995. Prof. Fuentes has presented over forty papers and training workshops on a wide range of topics at regional, national, and international conferences. He was the recipient of the Hunter College Presidential Award for Excellence in Service in 1994.
