The SEEK Department is housed in the School of Education because of its founding academic mandate: to provide developmental and remedial education for incoming students with good academic potential, but whose high school education did not prepare them to successfully matriculate in the university. The overall mission of the SEEK department, which is basic to the central mission of the City University of New York (CUNY), is to provide access to higher education for economically disadvantaged students. The Department’s goal is to assist students so as to increase the level of education and career opportunity in our city, state and nation.
The Department provides SEEK students with a supportive environment and offers personal, academic and career counseling, the Orientation for Success course, group and individual tutoring, and variety of academic and career seminars and workshops. SEEK at Hunter college has been nationally recognized for graduating more students than any other educational opportunity program. Hunter SEEK also has a chapter in the Chi Alpha Epsilon, National Honor Society.
Applicants to SEEK must be residents of New York State, have received a New York State high school diploma or the equivalent, and meet family income guidelines as determined by New York State. Students must indicate that they are applying to SEEK on their CUNY admissions application. Students must also file a FAFSA and CUNY FAF to determine final eligibility.
