ALST exam no longer required

Priority: Informational

On Monday 3/13/2017 the Board of Regents eliminated the requirement that teacher candidates take and pass the ALST to obtain an initial teaching certificate.

The exam requirement will be modified in TEACH. Currently, the New York State Education Department Office of Teaching Initiatives is working to remove the ALST requirement from all new applications. All existing applications will have the ALST requirement exempted.

Pearson is handling all aspects exam registration/cancellation/refunds. All future ALST registrations have been cancelled and refunds are generated automatically. Testing candidates are encouraged to check their account with Pearson/NYSTCE.

Pearson is unable to provide a refund to any candidate who has already taken the test, as the ALST was required for certification through March 13, 2017. Any results received for ALST attempts are still valid, though the way they apply to certification may have changed.
