NEW GRE ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENT

Priority: Alert

GRE Requirement for Teacher Education and Education Leadership Programs

The New York State Education Transformation Act of 2015 requires graduate-level teacher education and educational leadership programs to establish rigorous admissions selection criteria, which include a standardized admissions examination. The NYS Board of Regents codified the law’s requirements into the Chancellor’s regulations at the end of 2015. In accordance with this law, Hunter College School of Education requires applicants submit official scores of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) General Test for admission.

The School of Education has long had a robust review process by which faculty have successfully identified future teachers and administrators across our many certification programs. The addition of Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores to the application requirements for teacher preparation programs, now required by state law, will be another piece of a candidate’s application that each program will weigh appropriately.

Hunter College may exempt up to 15% of its incoming class from the GRE based on a student’s demonstration of potential to positively contribute to the teaching and/or educational leadership professions. Applicants may submit a GRE Exemption Request by completing this form. GRE Exemption Requests will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

WHEN AND HOW TO SUBMIT GRE SCORES

Applicants should register for the GRE at www.ets.org/gre as soon as possible. The Hunter College ETS code is 2301. By entering this code, the Hunter College Graduate Admissions office will receive the official score report.

Applicants may submit an application without a GRE score, and should indicate their exam date in the Standardized Test section of the application. Applicants will not receive a decision until the Graduate Admissions office receives a score. Official scores are usually received 3-4 weeks after the test date. To expedite a decision, applicants may email a PDF of the unofficial score report to gradadm@hunter.cuny.edu and request the score report be attached to an application.

IF YOU HAVE ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS ABOUT THE GRE REQUIREMENT, PLEASE CONTACT THE OFFICE OF ADMISSIONS AT EDADMISSIONS@HUNTER.CUNY.EDU OR VISIT ROOM W1000 AT HUNTER COLLEGE.
