Admission Requirements

ADMISSIONS STANDARDS

Matriculation Requirements

  1. A cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 2.8 from an accredited bachelor’s degree program or a GPA of at least 3.5 from a master’s program.
  2. New York State initial or provisional teacher certification as a middle childhood or content area teacher of grades 7-12.
  3. Satisfactory communication skills, as demonstrated through an oral interview and an on-site writing sample, after the application is reviewed.
  4. Submission of a letter of recommendation from a supervisor to be included in the application as one of the two required recommendations.

 

Non-matriculant Status Requirements

  1. Applicants who have completed an approved New York State teacher education program in middle childhood, or a content area of grades 7-12, and who have passed all required New York State certification tests but who have not yet received their initial teaching certificate may be admitted as non-matriculants if space is available.
  2. Applicants who have an undergraduate GPA between 2.5 and 2.79 may be interviewed by the literacy faculty for non-matriculant acceptance if space is available.
  3. Teachers certified in states other than New York can be accepted into the program on a non-matriculated basis and may take up to 12 credits while seeking reciprocal certification in New York State.

 

Change in Status from Non-martriculated to matriculated.

  1. Those applicants who meet all requirements for matriculation other than having received their proof of certification must re-apply for matriculation as soon as they can show proof of New York State certification.
  2. Those applicants who are accepted as non-matriculants should apply for matriculation during the semester in which they complete 9-12 credits of literacy courses if they have obtained NYS Initial Teacher Certification.  Students must have achieved an overall grade point average of at least 3.0 within the program.
  3. Non-matriculated students who do not meet these criteria may not continue to enroll in courses.

 

PROGRESS STANDARDS

When 12-15 (content core transition point) and 27-30 credits have been obtained in the Literacy Program, the following Progress standards will be evaluated.

1.    Master’s candidates must maintain an overall GPA of at least 3.0.

2.    Master’s candidates with more than one courage grade below B- in literacy courses will not be allowed to continue in the program.

3.    Master’s candidates with a grade of Incomplete in any course will be restricted from registering for more than one course.

4.    master’s candidates with two or more grades of Incomplete are prohibited from registering for any courses.

 

EXIT STANDARDS

  1. Overall GPA of 3.0 or better.
  2. A grade of B or better in EDLIT 740, in which a culminating project is completed.
  3. Completion of 27-30 credits in the program.  Students may be exempted from up to 3 credits based on prior equivalent coursework.
  4. A satisfactory rating, or better, in EDLIT 756 as reflected in a grade of B or better.
  5. An “achieved the standard” rating, or better on the Professional Teaching Portfolio during final presentation to the Literacy Portfolio Review Committee.
  6. Students must pass the School of Education technology assessment.
